Recreating Airbnb Application with the added function of group purchases.

10/2019

The Airbnb projects were given to me by ACSTechnologies. The project goal was to see how I would redesign the Airbnb project with one little twist. How would someone book an Airbnb for a group of people?

Problem.

As you read from the previous paragraph, there are two problems I face in the Airbnb project. The first problem I had to deal with was to redesign the application. This problem required that I had to think out of the box while still in the box. I had to find the balance between being as creative as possible as well as following the style of Airbnb. The second problem was to create an added feature of purchasing an Airbnb as a group. This meant I had to think of splitting payments and sharing an itinerary.

Style Guide.

color.

Because I was redesigning a pre-existing application, I opted to keep all their current colors. The only difference is that I would have used the colors a little differently. The Primary color is Rausch (#ff5a5f), with two secondary colors: Babu (#00a699) and Arches (#fc642d).

fonts.

Again, because I was redesigning from a pre-existing application, I opted to keep the primary font the same, which is, Airbnb Cereal. Airbnb Cereal is actually one of those hidden gem fonts. There are not many people that know about it, but Airbnb Cereal is nice enough to use for running text but can be bold enough to be titles for the design.

style.

Back in 2019, the Airbnb website was still in square shape style, and the only thing that needed to be round was what was necessary. At this time, Google's Material design had just come out. Their objective was to create a clean and paper-like material digitally with shadows, and I wanted to mimic that design.

Solution.

As you may have read, the first problem was to redesign the style of Airbnb. The hardest part was trying to be as creative as possible but keeping the style of Airbnb. The result was an updated Airbnb, where edges were more rounded, shadows were added to give the illusion of stack paper, and an increased amount of cards to organize better. The second solution to my problem was to think of what groups of users need to purchase an Airbnb. The main two things that users need from reserving an Airbnb is sharing payment and sharing itinerary. The first thing I did was compacted the users' information and controls, so the users don't need to jump through too many hoops to complete their tasks. Compacting the user's info and controls give the user the ability to see all the information before they can make a decision. The next step was to make sure the users send the other half of their payment to the other guest/payers. After completing the sharing task, the users can pay for their share of the stay. Please also note I put a warning and a precaution to cancel the payment if the whole transaction is not complete by a certain date. This was created to protect the host from being ripped off.
